My Own Vanity (Breen)

My Own Vanity (Breen)
All the world looks fresh and new
Sit tin’ on this old porch with you
You take all my pain away
Every-time you say my name
But I wish I looked a little younger
Wish I could move a little faster
But that’s just my own vanity
And the way I hope you’ll remember
Me
The little dock out on the lake
The little boat we used to take
Is that something I just dreamed
or someone I just wanted to be
When I looked a little younger
When I could move a little faster
that’s just my own vanity
And the way I hope you’ll remember
Me
It’s always been easy with you
I’ve always loved the way you do
The things you’ve always wanted to
And still kept me close thru and thru
We keep an eye out for the rain
Colder weather, aches and pains
But At this stage I can’t complain
Just a couple things I’d rearrange
I’d Look a little younger
I'd move a little faster
But That’s just my own vanity
And the way I hope you’ll
Remember
Me

I NEED YOU TO STAY (Breen)
I dreamed in the summer I dreamed in the fall
I dreamed in the winter, well I’ve dreamed it all
to be so in love and to miss someone
and my heart is beginning to finally thaw
been so many years since I’ve felt at all
And to love someone but now you’re gone
AND I NEED YOU TO LOVE ME
I NEED YOU TO HOLD
I NEED YOU TO WARM ME
WHEN NIGHTS ARE SO COLD
AND I’VE TRIED TO RESIST IT
TO STAND ON MY OWN
BUT I CAN’T TAKE THE HEARTACHE
OF BEIN’ ALONE
AND I NEED YOU TO COME BACK
TO STAY WITH ME BABY
I NEED YOU TO BE HERE
EVERYDAY
I MISS YOU SO MUCH
I CAN’T STAND IT THIS WAY
AND I NEED YOU TO BE HERE
I NEED YOU TO STAY
walkin’ on egg shells breathin’ thin air
my whole world is different
I’m feelin’ so scared
to be so in love after all these years
and the hard part is knowin’ you’re so far away
you’d be here with me if I had my way
but I guess I don’t
And I just miss you girl
AND I NEED YOU TO LOVE ME
I NEED YOU TO HOLD
I NEED YOU TO WARM ME
WHEN NIGHTS ARE SO COLD
AND I’VE TRIED TO RESIST IT
TO STAND ON MY OWN
BUT I CAN’T TAKE THE HEARTACHE
OF BEIN’ ALONE
AND I NEED YOU TO COME BACK
TO STAY WITH ME BABY
I NEED YOU TO BE HERE
EVERYDAY
I MISS YOU SO MUCH
I CAN’T STAND IT THIS WAY
AND I NEED YOU TO BE HERE
I NEED YOU TO STAY

Country Singer (Mike Breen)
copyright 1994
Breensongs Pub BMI
Basilbone Records
Well, I’m a country singer
and I play a fast guitar
Never made the big time
just move from bar to bar
Been from here to heartache
searching for the price of fame
but a thousand dusty bar rooms
can wear your life away
CHORUS
I’m a country singer
I don’t ask why
just sing for the way I feel
underneath the lights
Like a rollin’ river
Like a blue mornin’ sky
I’ll be a country singer
until the day I die
Now, when I was a young man
and the world was at my feet
everything I hoped for
seemed just within my reach
but a taste for other women
and a drink or two too much
left me empty handed
all run out of luck
CHORUS
From Jackson Hole to Reno
Vegas to LA
I may not be a legend
when I get up and play
But I’m every country singer
in every one horse town
and I’ll ride the same old circuit
‘till the honky tonks close down
CHORUS

Girl From Northern Maine. (Breen)
He could hear the humming of the wires
As he waited for the train
And he wondered if she looked like him
Or the girl from northern Maine
Well he checked his watch and he tied his shoe
And he thought about her call
And the daughter that he never knew
Was she blonde like him or tall
Chorus
Like the girl from northern Maine
Bright eyes of Hazel
With a love so full and strong
She was a girl from northern Maine
And he just wasn't able to hold her heart for very long
An old photograph from a college dance
That he kept inside a drawer
Of a girl he left in a bind one night
So many years before
Well he clutched it tight
in his calloused hands
As he heard the train pull in
Hoping he would recognize a mouth a nose a grin
Chorus
And as the years go by you hope they're right
When they say that time can heal
Because all you ever need is one more chance
For love to find a way love will find away
He could hear the humming of the wires
As she step down from the train
And he thought that she looked just like him
And the girl from Northern Maine
As he pushed his way home through the crowd
And when she finally came near
The daughter that he never knew
Smiled and wiped away a tear
CHORUS
She was a girl from Northern Maine

I Still (Breen)

I Still (Breen)
She was a hard one I guess if you knew her
I asked her but she wouldn’t stay.
The harder I tried to hold her
The faster she’d run away
She was a woman of her own convictions
Chasin’ her own destiny
Pushin herself to be different
Than I ever wanted to be
Seduction was her choice of weapons
A temptress in the first degree
She’d lock you up in her lovin’
And throw away the key
I still
She had Our Lady of Guadalupe
Tattooed on her shoulder and arm
I asked her why she had it
She said it was her good luck charm
She drove a ‘71 Ford Bronco
Lifted and fully restored
We’d drive out to the edge of town
At night whenever it stormed
We’d listen to songs on that shitty radio
And dance ‘till it was almost dawn
God how I miss her sweet lovin’
Even now after so long
And I still. I still I still
She was that one that you never get over
Like a car wreck you can’t turn away
Burned in your heart and memory
And I ain’t been the same since I met her that day
She’s my daily reminder
She’s the cause of my current disease
But if I ever can find her
I’ll beg her to come back to me
Cause I still

Fly Away With Me (Breen)
Fly away with me she said
Fly away with me she said
to a place I promise
That you've never been
come and play with me she said
Come and play with me she said
sail away with me to the
song inside my head
Where all the rivers flow
Where all the rainbows go
A place only lovers know
I can take you there
If you’ll fly away with me
steal away with me she said
steal away with me she said
leave your cares behind
Let me ease your mind instead
Where all the rivers flow
Where all the rainbows go
A place only lovers know
I can take you there
Where all the rivers flow
Where all the rainbows go
A place only lovers know
I can take you there
If you’ll fly away
with me
If you’ll fly away
with me
Fly Away

Autumn Afternoon (Breen)

Autumn Afternoon (Mike Breen)
He met her when she was a waitress
on a cold November afternoon
a little diner on the highway
with a jukebox full of country tunes
He had a talent for description
a writer’s eye for seeing truth
and when she poured his cup of coffee
he noticed the graceful way she moved
but he was not prepared for what happened there
on that Autumn Afternoon
CHORUS
When she smiled the way she smiled
talked the way she talked
made him feel like a boy in school
when the leaves were turning and the wind was blowing
but his heart was melting like the snow in June
on that Autumn Afternoon
The customers all seemed to know her
‘cause when they walked through that front door
they’d say “What’s the special, how ‘ya doin’
are you still single, Eleanor?”
He like the way that her name looked
on the tag by her lapel
and like some secret incantation
he whispered it softly to himself
she brought him eggs and fries
ketchup on the side
and he fell underneath her spell
REPEAT CHORUS
Ooo…
They got married in the springtime
he sold a story to the Post
She quit her job to raise their family
That was fifty years ago
Now they’re old and she reminds him
when he forgets a thing or two
like when the cider is in season
or when the roses are in bloom
But he remembers when
they fell in love back then
on that Autumn Afternoon
REPEAT CHORUS
….when she smiled the way she smiled

The Great Wall Of China (Breen)
Put some coffee on the stove Light another cigarette
watch the embers glow and trace your silhouette
It’s been so hard for us to talk and when I try to ask you why
I feel the cold wind blow across my lover’s eyes
Maybe I should blame myself just as easy someone else
words unspoken sit alone up the shelf
and I don’t want to lose control I don’t want to see you cry
I don’t want to have to say the words “Good Bye”
I guess that’s what it’s come to, you and I
The Great Wall Of China still survives
I can’t walk around
I can’t tear it down
I try to climb but it’s to high
The Great Wall Of China still survives
How can I love you
when your on the other side
I used to like these winter nights when down the road was looking bright
and frosty window sills would melt in morning’s light
I used to like these worn out shoes but now the sound that fills the room
is when they slowly turn and walk away from you
And then the creaking of the door, the handle’s cold against my hand
I turn my collar up and let that screen door slam
I guess that’s what it’s come to, you and I
The Great Wall Of China still survives
I can’t walk around
I can’t tear it down
I try to climb but it’s to high
The Great Wall Of China still survives
How can I love you
when your on the other side
So put some coffee on the stove, light another cigarette
and down the road somewhere I’ll trace your silhouette

Fancy Balloons (Breen)
Henry graduated in the 70's
from the Barnum and Bailey clown school
got him a job with the circus
Twistin' them fancy balloons
Nadine drove the truck for her daughter
Whose dog act was best in the show
but she kept falling asleep while driving or
Runnin' off the road in the snow
So, Henry became their new driver
He was young and handy all around
Nadine would fall asleep on Henry's shoulder
Each time drivin' to the next town
Fancy Balloons, old country tunes. Playin' on the radio
Fancy Balloons, we'll get there soon. Just lay your head on my shoulder
Well the years and the miles all ran together
In the cab of that truck they fell in love.
Nadine didn't mind that he was younger
Watching him change the oil and plugs
Henry had never met a woman
a woman the likes of Nadine
It didn't matter -that she was so much older
To him she was the the girl of his dreams
Fancy Balloons, old country tunes. Play in' on the radio
Fancy Balloons, we'll get there soon. Just lay your head on my shoulder
Well Barnum and Bailey they closed down
Set all of the animals free
And somewhere in some circus museum
There's a picture of Henry and Nadine with there
Fancy Balloons, old country tunes. Playin' on the radio
Fancy Balloons, we'll get there soon. Just lay your head on my shoulder

These Harbor Lights (Breen)
These Harbor Lights shine like diamonds and the Autumn air is cold
And the fog looks like a giant blanket starting to unfold
and from this hill top we built dreams that sailed this harbor wide
but now my love, you’re somewhere far beyond these harbor lights
Seattle’s home, this is the place I carved your name in stone
the waves would crack the rocks like thunder as we’d make love all night long
but now the water’s calm and moonlight’s shining in the tide
and the boat your on is somewhere far beyond these harbor lights
(CHORUS)
Oh they shine like diamonds
they sparkle in the rain
and my heart is wondering
if I’ll feel that way again
One by one the lights go out as the day begins to dawn
And the morning chill makes me shiver and the wind cuts to the bone
and it’s then I wonder if you’ve found someone to hold you tight
and if you ever think of home and miss these harbor lights
(CHORUS)
Oh they shine like diamonds
they sparkle in the rain
and my heart is wondering
if I’ll feel that way again
These harbor lights shine like diamonds

You’ll Never Walk Alone (Breen)
You’ll never walk alone
in this world of stone
all the seeds you sown
some will take you home
You’ll never walk alone
in this world of stone
all the seeds you sown
some will take you home
Hey Baby
where did those sparkling eyes go?
They used to look towards the new day
wherever that you’d roam
Now you’re cryin’ like a baby
‘cause he won’t pick up the phone
and he’s left your heart in pieces
and he won’t be comin’ home
You’ll never walk alone
in this world of stone
all the seeds you sown
some will take you home
Hey Baby,
Where’s that suitcase that you own
that’s full of cheshire smiles
and possibilities unknown
So just come over
and I promise to keep you safe and warm
and help you gather up the pieces
and when you’re strong enough you’ll know
You’ll never walk alone
in this world of stone
all the seeds you sown
some will take you home
and the world is a place
time can’t erase
and the dreams you thought were lost
are just missplaced
You’ll never walk alone
in this world of stone
all the seeds you sown
some will take you home
